Intrusion Detection: Turning Delay Into Warning

A barrier only ever buys time. Intrusion detection is what turns that borrowed time into a warning, and a warning into a response before anyone reaches what matters. Locks, fences and shutters slow an intruder down, yet they do so in silence. Detection notices the intruder while the clock is still running, which is really the whole point of it. Without detection, you may own a strong shell and never learn it has been breached until the morning. Consequently, detection is where physical security stops being passive and starts doing real work.

What detection adds

Think of protection as four linked jobs: deter, detect, delay and respond. Barriers handle deterrence and delay well, but they cannot raise the alarm on their own. A silent barrier is bypassed with ease. Detection supplies the missing signal, and only a signal lets a response actually begin. In practice, a barrier that nobody is watching merely postpones the inevitable. Therefore the useful question about any alarm is not simply whether it will trigger. A better question asks who learns, how quickly they learn, and what they are then expected to do about it.

The main types of sensor

Detection technologies fall into a few broad families, and each one suits a different job:

  • Perimeter sensors watch a boundary – fence-mounted detectors, beams across an approach, or buried cable that senses disturbance.
  • Volumetric sensors cover a space inside, typically using passive infra-red or microwave to catch movement in a room.
  • Point sensors protect one specific thing – a door contact, a glass-break detector, or a tamper switch on a cabinet.

No single family does everything. Instead, sound schemes layer them deliberately, so that the failure or defeat of one type is caught by another. As a result, an intruder who slips past the fence line still meets a sensor indoors, and then another at the safe itself. For example, a warehouse might ring its perimeter, cover the aisles, and still place the strongroom door on a zone of its own.

Detection without response is theatre

Here lies the most common and most expensive mistake of all. An alarm that nobody hears, or one that triggers a response nobody attends, is not security; it is merely decoration. Before choosing sensors, decide who receives the alert at three in the morning, and settle exactly what they must then do. Perhaps a monitoring centre calls a keyholder. A guard might patrol the site instead, or the police attend under a valid response agreement. Whatever the model, the sensor is the cheap part, and the response arrangement is what you are truly buying. Moreover, a response you have never rehearsed remains only a theory until the night it finally fails.

The false-alarm problem

Detection carries a natural enemy: the false alarm. A system that repeatedly cries wolf trains everyone around it to ignore the next call, and a run of false activations can lose police response altogether. Therefore sensor choice and placement deserve real thought rather than guesswork. Crucially, placement is everything here. A detector pointed at a heater, a flapping banner or a busy road will misfire, so siting, sensitivity and confirmation all matter. Dual-technology sensors, which trigger only when two methods agree, cut false activations sharply in awkward environments. By contrast, a well-sited system earns trust, and a trusted alarm is one that people still act on at three in the morning.

Keeping it working

Like every physical measure, detection decays quietly over time. Sensors drift, batteries fade, and a re-arranged office leaves a beam pointing hopefully at a new partition wall. Batteries are forgotten all too easily. Walk-test the system on a regular schedule, rather than trusting the annual maintenance visit as proof that all is well. Confirm that each zone still covers what the original design assumed it would. Above all, check the alarm path from end to end, from the sensor itself through to the person who must act on it. Similarly, a documented test log turns vague reassurance into evidence that the scheme still performs.

Where to start with intrusion detection

Begin from the asset itself, and not from the catalogue. Ask what you are protecting, how someone would reach it, and how much delay your barriers really provide. That delay tells you where a detected intrusion still leaves enough time to respond. First, map the delay each layer provides; then place detection exactly where that delay runs out. Design detection to fill precisely that gap, and then confirm that a response can arrive inside it. In short, settle the response first, and then choose the sensors second.
